8-Day Kerala Cycling Holiday

Day 1 - Kochi - On arrival we will check into the Old Courtyard Hotel, Fort Cochin - 200 year old Portuguese building, centered around a cobblestone courtyard. After a chance to relax and freshen up we have lunch, and then the rest of the afternoon to discover a little of this amazing city. Kochi (Cochin as it was known in colonial times) is a major port on the west coast of India, set on a cluster of islands surrounded by sparkling blue lagoons and backwaters. Its historic links can be seen in the Colonial Bungalows, an old Jewish Synagogue, Chinese fishing nets, the oldest European Church in India and a medieval Portuguese Palace. We finish the evening with a Kathakali dance performance.

Day 2, 3 -  Thattekkad - After breakfast we start off on our cycle challenge making the most of the early morning coolness heading towards the foothills of the western Ghats towards the lowland forests of Thattekkad. We will start a little off the city limits enabling us to avoid the morning city traffic and reach a quiet countryside where the roads are mostly level throughout the morning. We pass through scenic countryside of temples, spice gardens, paddy fields and rubber plantations. After a leisurely lunch en-route we will cross the ferry on the River Periyar to reach the Kuttanpuzha Creek where we will settle into the Hornbill Camp by the riverside. We will also go on a cycling trip to Edamalayar, a forested area and return after lunch at the Edamalayar lake.

Day 4 - Thodupuzha -. From Thattekkad we will cycle along the banks of the Periyar river and head to Thodupuzha - a picturesque little town. Our ride takes us through winding roads built amidst farmlands and rubber plantations. Our destination today is Dewalokam - an exceptionally beautiful farm on the banks of Kannadipuzha in the lower ranges of the Western Ghats . Here we can take a walk around the farm that is forested with well yielding rubber trees, littered with huge teak, mahogany and fruit bearing trees like mango and jack fruit. We can also take a closer look at a typical spice garden with nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper vines.

Day 5 - Petta - We will continue our cycling towards Eratupetta a commercial town located on the banks or Meenachil River . Our stay will be at a mansion surrounded by rubber trees spreading their lovely cool shade everywhere.

Day 6 – Kumarakom- We start the day’s cycling from Eeratupetta town and cycle through the rubber plantations. We take a break next to a natural pool under a huge rock formation.  Next bit of cycling will be on the highway and we will head for Ettumanoor Town, famous for the Ettumanoor Appan Temple . From Ettumanoor we will cycle through the village roads along the paddy fields till we reach Kumarakom where we will finish our ride and embark the world famous and luxurious Rice Boat for unique experience of cruising down the backwaters.

Day 7 - Marari Beach - Our journey today will take us to a Heritage villa on a spec tacular beach where we will spend  relaxing in the village ambience at the Arakkal Heritage. You can also spend your time waking through the rustic village, visit the local temples or farmlands.
